I save fuel by planning my trips, ACcelerating slowly, and driving efficiently.
If it's nice weather and not too noisy I roll the windows down a bit. With the sweltering heat and humidity we have in Houston; the AC is on.

Who decides whether or not to turn on the A/C based on mileage?

If it is not swelteringly hot (temps above 90 degrees Farenheit), crank down the windows a bit will induce less drag. I can't see that as being less fuel efficient than having the AC on, no matter what vehicle you drive.

if it's not too hot why bother with A/C? but when you're cruising at 70 mph having windows open... it also all depends on the car's ventilation.

Use A/C to keep cool on the highway, but don't speed excessively which only wastes gas.

You gotta do what you gotta do. If it is too hot, protect yourself. It is not worth killing oneself for a few MPG.

Hmm, interesting! - If either way is fine, I'll still stick with windows down for lower speeds up to 45 mph and A/C for Freeway or 50+ mph.

I will use the windows, as long as the humidity is not so bad. When the humidity makes it too sticky, the AC goes on.

By todays technology, you will probably lose 1 or 2 mpg with either your windows down at 60 mph or windows up with AC on. If temp is above 90 degrees, it almost seems a no brainer, but I may be wrong 8-)

Old news and bad info at he end. It's been proven that pickups should drive with the tagegate UP to save gas! Check out Mythbusters if you think I'm wrong.

I usually drive around town with the windows down and A/C off, unless it gets unbearably hot (which it often does in Central FL).
On the highway, its windows up and sunroof open in the mornings and tolerably hot afternoons. But in Summers 90+ afternoon temp, the A/C goes on once I get up to 70 mph. If I wait till I get up to speed to activate the A/C, I see very little difference in my fuel economy.

What is the use of doing these studies. They are waste of time. A waste of their time doing studies like this and a waste of my time reading it. Nobody agrees on anything. I did not learn anything from reading this.
