Automakers' new jobs leave many without a chance

Tennessean -- For 29-year-old widow Jennifer Pilch, the journey to a full-time job at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne included more than 5 years as a temporary worker.

Thousands more — including Paul Roberts, who was laid off for about 30 months — have spent fruitless hours searching online for the 6,500 Michigan jobs the Detroit Three have added since 2009.

Pilch’s and Roberts’ experiences illustrate the hope and frustration of the auto industry’s continuing recovery: For every person who gets a coveted job on the line, hundreds more don’t.

Most assembly line production jobs require a high school diploma or GED, and for the Detroit Three, all start at $15.78 per hour.

In many cases, hourly postings on jobs sites have been kept quiet, giving de facto preference to people who know someone in

seems that's a "nice" way to pay back the people who made D3 what it was (doubt it ever will be the same after this economic trouble).

This whole thing stinks! Jobs should be (if qualified) FIRST COME, first hired.

When starting out you have to gain the experience and know how to get higher pay. If you are not willing to work for it, then stay at the lower pay rate or stay at home and have No Job.
With Barry's lousy, smoke and mirrors, lack of jobs, dog and pony show and in the crapper economy, the good paying jobs are Not there! Barry can spin the jobs numbers so they look much better than what they really are, he's a smooooth talker if there ever was one!
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, has a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost.

If you are really determined to spend your life working for someone else, consider one of the myriad of those in the health care industry. Baby boomers are getting sick left and right and there are never enough workers to care for them all.

None of this surprises me, especially the hundreds or thousands waiting for a job opening while only a few get them.

It's always been that way at GM and Ford around Atlanta, if you don't know someone, you won't get hired.

What's sad is $15.78 an hour is a good wage for someone with a high school diploma or GED.

Wow...$15.78 an hour!

Time to get off the grid and screw employers by learning to work for yourselves. The work involved to drag your ass out to a job for such pitifull wages in a factory is better spent working on the house.

Screw em'...Farm it all out to China. Meanwhile we can do things that China cannot do like grow more than enough food.

The auto sector will hire less and less people in the future as robotics and automation replace humans on the line.

So why is this different from any other industry. There are not enough jobs to go around in this economy for anyone, particularly if you don't have much of an education.
