Ethanol makers idle plants amid high corn prices

AP -- Ethanol makers are cutting production, and some are temporarily idling plants in the Midwest, as corn prices skyrocket and demand for gasoline falls because people are driving less.

More than 95 percent of the nation’s ethanol plants use corn starch as their basis for the biofuel. That makes these facilities especially vulnerable to high corn prices in a commodity market nervous about triple-digit temperatures and drought in major corn-growing regions. Most of the more than 200 ethanol plants in the United States are in the Midwest, where most corn is grown.

A glut of the biofuel is squeezing ethanol makers further. The poor economy and high gas prices have people driving less, and ethanol is primarily used in gasoline blends.

‘‘It is no different than the oil industry when markets are

Not a fan of ethanol but at 10% or less it does not damage engines
and it does not dissolve or damage plastic seals gaskets etc
Hell you can but whiskey etc which is 40% of more ethanol in plastic bottles

I am against ethanol because they use food crops to produce it, and requires too much energy to produce

I have never seen the farmers hated so much in my life.

Stick with farming and stay out of the fuel business.

Lets get back to what corn used to be used for and our country too.

Who is a major player in ethanol?
Flint Hills Resources,LP (A Koch Industries company)own and operate ethanol plants in Iowa producing 425 million gallon annually.
David Koch is chairman of the Americans for Prosperity Foundation.
Americans for Prosperity "stimulated" the Tea Party movement with financial and personal support.
The Kochs are the largest single oil and gas donator to the election of House Energy and Commerce Commerce members.

get rid of the corn based ethanol

"In the end, even the most generous analysts estimate that it takes the energy equivalent of three gallons of ethanol to make four gallons of the stuff. Some even argue that it takes more energy to produce ethanol from corn than you get out of it, but most agricultural economists think that's a stretch."

There are biofuels other than corn that can be used for ethanol. Using good cropland to make ethanol is a waste of resources and has only raised food prices around the globe.

Engines today are built with ethanol in mind. It is the impurities in the cheaper gasolines that cause the damage.

Simply stated, ethanol should be outlawed. You void your warranty on 2 cycle engines, outboard engines, and you can't use it in piston driven airplanes.
Had to spend $1700.in repair bills on my car cause ethanol destroyed my gaskets, seals, sending units and measurement unit. My ASE mech told me about it, but said every time someone says something, they are told to be quiet.

And they're 'cutting' the gas with higher than the 'max' 10% of ethanol.
